The Alves´s group has the experience in synthesis and characterization of polymer nanocomposites based on peptide and/or inorganic nanomaterials for immobilization of biomolecules, that permit us to investigate physical and chemical issues of pertinence to energy conversion, and their pharmacological, therapeutic and industrial perspectives. In particular research focuses on the understanding of the chemical architecture - thermodynamic - structure - physical property correlations in complex systems to achieve process and product control using state of the art techniques, which include X-ray small angle scattering on large scale facilities. The goal is to obtain different supramolecular organizations with potential applications in energy/environment (e.g., artificial photosynthesis, solar bioprocess, bio-organic batteries) and healthcare (e.g., amyloid self-assembly, photodynamic therapy, biosensors, wearable bioelectronics).

UFABC is an independent public foundation to foster research and scientific and technological development of the State of Sao Paulo with many opportunities for international collaborations. UFABC gathers a state-of-the-art infrastructure for cutting-edge researches in fields related to nanosciences and advanced materials. Specifically, a huge multi-user platform is accessible for their researchers, postdocs, graduate students and technicians.
The Prof. Alves Lab has approximately 170 square meters, with scientific supplies and access to small infrastructure for preparation, characterization and physico-chemical studies: potentiostats, galvanostats, bipotentiostat with a Pine rotating ring disk electrode, FTIR and UV-Vis spectrophotometers, quartz crystal microbalance, lyophilization device, cold sputter coater, scanning electrochemical microscope, surface tension measurement and others.
In addition to the equipments available at UFABC, the current project can also count on the infrastructure accessible at the Brazilian Nanotechnology National Laboratory in Campinas (~100 Km from Santo André). Over there, we will be able to perform experiments involving synchrotron radiation for X-rays diffraction and scattering, HR transmission electron microscopy and take advantage of several microfabrication facilities.
